Unless you have a genius cousin lying on your sofa next door, hiring a SW developer will be essential for your startup at some stage.
But what type of developer do you need? What qualities should they have?
Let’s dig in…
There are two stages of SW development in startups:
1. Exploring and creative phase
2. Stabilizing and scaling phase
Each of them requires a different mindset and skill-set of your development team. The same as a person who has more matches on Tinder isn’t necessarily more successful in long-term relationships, developers who use out-of-the-box solutions aren’t necessarily better in stabilizing the product and preparing it for VCs to come in.
In the 1st phase, you need a problem-solver. Someone who is able to understand the purpose of the product, who is willing to change things, and not get too attached to the code they have already written. The exploration phase is full of unpredictable bumps on the road, which they should be ready for.
In the 2nd phase, you need someone to prepare the product for more developers to join the team. The structure has to be clear, the onboarding process set, technical documentation in the process, if not done already. For that, you need an entirely different skill-set than for the 1st one.
If you’re still reading this, let me tell you how we managed to solve this with our client, Avvoka:
We know we’re strong in the first phase of development. We know how to ask questions, understand the core of the project, and focus on the minimalistic and most efficient way of development.
The plan was to hire their own internal team at some point — to stabilize the company and to be independent of any external supplier. But why should they hire first-stage developers, and then a completely different kind of developer for the next stage?
So…
We developed the product to the point where they needed a different approach, and then we helped them hire and onboard their own internal team (because we know how to do that too).
